There are some experiences in Iceland that feel like sightseeing.
And then there are experiences that feel like entering another world.
Our journey into Langjökull glacier was definitely the second kind.
We started from Húsafell on a Saturday morning in June, heading toward the edge of Langjökull for an experience that would eventually take us across the glacier in a Super Truck and deep inside the ice itself.
This was not simply a visit to a glacier viewpoint.
We were going inside the glacier.

Leaving Húsafell
Our journey began in Húsafell, surrounded by the rugged landscape of West Iceland.
From there, we travelled toward the edge of Langjökull.
As the road climbed higher, the landscape gradually changed.
The greener surroundings around Húsafell gave way to rougher mountain terrain, open views and the increasingly remote feeling that comes with travelling toward Iceland's highlands.
Eventually, we reached the mountain base used by Arctic Adventures.
This was where the real adventure began.
Arriving at the Mountain Hut
At the glacier base, we were welcomed into a simple mountain hut.
It immediately felt very different from a conventional tourist centre.
The building was heated with oil, and the smell of the warm hut mixed with the cold mountain air outside.
It was one of those small details that stayed with us.
There was something authentic about standing inside that warm mountain shelter, surrounded by guides and other travellers, knowing that just outside was the road toward one of Iceland's largest glaciers.
The Arctic Adventures staff welcomed everyone and began preparing us for the journey ahead.
Getting Ready for the Glacier
Before heading higher, we were offered additional cold-weather clothing.
Warm overalls were available for anyone who needed them.
Even though we visited in June, conditions on a glacier are very different from conditions at lower elevation.
The temperature drops, the wind can be stronger, and once you enter the ice tunnel itself the environment becomes noticeably colder.
After everyone was prepared, it was time to meet the vehicle that would take us onto Langjökull.
And this was not an ordinary bus.
Super Truck
Into the Super Truck
We were directed toward a large Super Truck, specially equipped for travelling across Icelandic mountain and glacier terrain.
Climbing aboard immediately changed the feeling of the experience.
The comfortable road journey from Húsafell was over.
Now we were beginning a proper 4x4 journey into the highlands and onto the glacier.
As the vehicle started climbing toward Langjökull, the road became rougher and the surroundings increasingly remote.
This part of the experience was far more exciting than we expected.
The Super Truck worked its way across uneven mountain terrain, climbing toward the glacier through a landscape that felt completely removed from everyday Iceland.
There were no city streets, no normal traffic and no conventional roads.
Just mountains, ice, snow and the huge vehicle carrying us toward the glacier.
Driving onto Langjökull
Eventually, the terrain beneath us changed.
We were no longer simply driving toward Langjökull.
We were on the glacier itself.
Looking through the windows of the Super Truck, the landscape became increasingly white.
The scale of Langjökull is difficult to appreciate from maps or photographs.
Once you're actually travelling across it, the size of the ice cap becomes much easier to understand.
The glacier seems to stretch endlessly into the surrounding mountains.
Even in summer, this is an environment dominated by snow and ice.
And somewhere ahead of us was the entrance to the glacier tunnel.
Arriving at the Ice Tunnel
When we reached the entrance, the guides organised everyone before we went inside.
Our group was divided into two smaller groups, making it easier to move safely through the tunnel and allowing everyone to hear the guide properly.
Before entering, each person was given crampons.
There was a very good reason for that.
We were about to walk directly on ice.
Once the crampons were secured to our footwear, the entrance to the glacier waited in front of us.
Then we stepped inside.
Entering the Glacier
The change is immediate.
Outside, you are surrounded by a vast white glacier and open mountain landscape.
Inside, the world becomes enclosed, cold and almost silent.
The walls around us were made entirely of ice.
What surprised us most was the colour.
Parts of the glacier appeared incredibly white, while deeper sections revealed beautiful shades of blue.
Light passing through compressed glacier ice creates colours that are difficult to fully capture in photographs.
Standing inside Langjökull and seeing those blue tones around us was one of the highlights of the entire experience.
It didn't feel like walking through a normal cave.
We were walking through the glacier itself.
Walking Deeper into Langjökull
As we continued farther into the tunnel, the guides began explaining what we were seeing around us.
The glacier isn't simply one uniform block of ice.
Its walls contain layers that tell a story.
Different periods of snowfall and compression can be seen within the ice, creating visible changes in colour and texture.
But one of the most fascinating things we saw was evidence of Iceland's volcanic history.
Volcanic Ash Frozen in the Ice
Inside the glacier, our guide pointed out dark lines running through the ice.
These were layers of volcanic ash.
Iceland's glaciers preserve evidence of eruptions that happened long before our visit.
Ash from volcanic eruptions falls onto the glacier surface.
Over time, new snow accumulates on top.
The snow is compressed into ice, leaving the ash trapped inside the glacier.
The result is something extraordinary.
You can literally see parts of Iceland's geological history preserved inside the ice.
Standing inside Langjökull and looking at these dark volcanic layers makes the glacier feel less like a frozen landscape and more like a historical record.
Each layer represents another period in Iceland's past.
For us, this was one of the most interesting parts of the tour.
A Glacier Is Constantly Changing
Walking through the tunnel also gives you a much better understanding of how dynamic glaciers are.
From the outside, a glacier can look permanent.
Solid.
Almost motionless.
But it isn't.
Glaciers move.
They compress.
They melt.
Water runs through them.
New ice forms while older ice changes.
The guides explained different features visible throughout the tunnel and how the glacier has developed over time.
Being able to see those structures from inside the ice makes the explanation much easier to understand than simply reading about glaciers.
The Colours Inside the Ice
The blue sections of Langjökull deserve special mention.
Glacier ice can become incredibly dense after years of compression.
As light passes through this dense ice, the glacier absorbs more of the longer wavelengths of visible light while allowing more blue light to reach our eyes.
The result can be spectacular.
Some areas appeared pale blue.
Others were almost white.
And depending on the lighting and structure of the ice, the colour changed as we moved through the tunnel.
For photography, this creates some remarkable opportunities.
But it is also worth putting the camera away occasionally.
Standing quietly inside a glacier and simply looking at the ice around you is something photographs cannot completely recreate.
What Surprised Us Most
Before taking the tour, we expected the ice tunnel itself to be the main attraction.
And it certainly was impressive.
But the full experience turned out to be much more than the tunnel.
The journey from Húsafell.
The mountain hut.
Preparing for the glacier.
Climbing into the Super Truck.
The rough 4x4 journey.
Driving across Langjökull.
Putting on crampons.
And finally walking inside the ice.
All of those elements together made the day feel like a genuine expedition rather than simply visiting another attraction.
What to Wear
Even if you're travelling in summer, prepare for cold conditions.
We visited in June, but conditions on Langjökull were much colder than they were around Húsafell.
We recommend:
warm layers
good footwear
gloves
a hat
wind-resistant outer clothing
Warm overalls were available during our experience for visitors who needed additional protection.
The crampons required for walking inside the glacier were provided by the tour team.

The guides manage the glacier section and provide the necessary equipment for walking inside the tunnel.
However, you should be comfortable walking on uneven and potentially slippery surfaces.
Would We Do It Again?
Yes.
The experience had several completely different elements, and that is what made it memorable.
We began in Húsafell.
Then came the remote mountain landscape.
The warm, oil-heated mountain hut.
The Super Truck.
The drive onto Langjökull.
The crampons.
And finally the moment we stepped inside the glacier and saw the blue and white ice surrounding us.
Seeing volcanic ash preserved within the glacier made the experience even more fascinating.
It reminded us that Iceland's glaciers and volcanoes are not separate parts of the landscape.
They are connected pieces of the same geological story.
Walking through Langjökull allowed us to see that story from inside the ice.
