About

About Stórhöfði

The 121 m southern headland of Heimaey, famous for exposed ocean views, seabird colonies and long-running weather observations.

Panoramic Heimaey views and exceptional seabird habitat at the island's southern tip.

A walk around Stórhöfði combines some of Heimaey's broadest coastal views with excellent birdwatching. A staffed weather station has operated on the headland since 1921, reflecting the site's famously exposed conditions. Höfðahellir, also known as Stórhöfðahellir, lies in the eastern cliffs of the headland and is best understood as part of the same coastal landscape rather than as a separate drive-to cave attraction. Visitors should stay on paths and respect seasonal bird-protection measures.
