Silfra

About Silfra

Silfra is a freshwater fissure in Þingvellir National Park where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. The water is glacial melt from Langjökull that filters through porous lava rock for 30–100 years before emerging crystal clear with visibility up to 100 meters. At 2–4°C, the water requires dry suits, but the experience of snorkeling or diving between two continental plates is utterly unique. Silfra is consistently rated among the world's top dive sites.

🐉 Legends of Silfra

Silfra has been part of Icelandic folklore for generations. Local tales speak of hidden people (huldufólk) and other supernatural beings who inhabit the area. According to tradition, this place deserves respect and visitors should be mindful of the ancient spirits who call it home.

📖 History of Silfra

The fissure was created by the separation of the two tectonic plates, which drift apart by approximately 2 cm per year. The water in Silfra is glacial meltwater from Langjökull glacier that has been filtered through underground lava rock for 30–100 years, giving it extraordinary clarity with visibility up to 100 meters. Water temperature stays around 2°C year-round.

Lava Formations Close-Up

Look carefully at the lava formations near Silfra — each tells a story of how it cooled.

Rope lava, pillow lava, and columnar basalt each formed under different conditions, creating a geological textbook in stone.

Moss & Lichens

The moss and lichen growing on the volcanic rock are some of the first life to colonize new lava fields.

Some of these organisms grow less than 1cm per year, meaning the patches you see may be decades or centuries old.

Sunset Colors

The volcanic rock takes on incredible red and gold hues during sunset.

The iron-rich minerals in the lava glow in warm light, creating a photographer's paradise.
