Kleifarvatn Lake
About Kleifarvatn Lake
Kleifarvatn is the largest lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula, a moody volcanic lake surrounded by black lava fields and geothermal hills. The deep (97 m), cold water is slightly acidic from geothermal input and supports very little life. After a 2000 earthquake, the lake level dropped dramatically as water drained through new cracks in the lakebed, but it has since recovered. The lake has an eerie, desolate beauty and is popular for cold-weather photography and fishing.
