Grindavík is a fishing town on the Reykjanes Peninsula that became the centre of global attention in 2023–2024 when magma intrusions caused the town to be evacuated and a series of eruptions destroyed several homes and roads. Dramatic images of lava flowing over the town's defensive barriers were seen worldwide. Parts of the town are now permanently lost to new lava fields, and the ongoing eruption cycle — the most active volcanic episode in Iceland in decades — continues to reshape the peninsula.
