Details

Álftanes is a small peninsula in Garðabær, just south of Reykjavík, best known as the location of Bessastaðir — the official residence of the President of Iceland. The peninsula has a long history as an important place in Icelandic governance and culture. The campsite sits near the shore with sweeping views across Faxaflói bay, offering a tranquil base from which to explore the capital region. Garðabær is one of Iceland's wealthiest municipalities, with well-maintained parks, cycling paths, and coastal walks. Despite being only 15 minutes from central Reykjavík, Álftanes feels worlds away from the city, surrounded by sea on three sides. Visitors can cycle or walk the coastal paths, explore the historic Bessastaðir estate, and make day trips to Reykjavík's museums, geothermal pools, and the lively city centre.
