About Westfjords Heritage Museum (Byggðasafn)

The Westfjords Heritage Museum (Byggðasafn Vestfjarða) in Ísafjörður occupies four of Iceland's oldest wooden buildings, some dating to the late 17th century. The museum covers the history of fishing and maritime life in the Westfjords with original boats, fishing equipment, household artefacts and documents. The star exhibit is a full-size replica of an 18th-century fishing ship. The building complex itself is an architectural treasure, surrounded by the colourful 19th-century townscape of old Ísafjörður.
