Vatnsfjörður Nature Reserve

About Vatnsfjörður Nature Reserve

Vatnsfjörður is a small nature reserve on the shores of Vatnsfjörður bay in the southern Westfjords, protecting ancient birch woodland, wetlands and a coastal lagoon system. The reserve is excellent for birdwatching, with white-tailed eagles (Iceland's largest bird) regularly nesting nearby. Walking trails explore the birch forest — one of Iceland's few areas of lowland woodland — and the shoreline. An abandoned farm within the reserve has an interesting history as one of the Westfjords' most productive fishing stations.
