Thjorsardalur Valley
About Thjorsardalur Valley
Þjórsárdalur (Thjorsardalur) Valley is a historically and geologically rich area in South Iceland, carved by the Þjórsá river (Iceland's longest river). The valley contains some of Iceland's most important archaeological sites, most notably Stöng, a Viking-age farmstead buried by ash from the catastrophic Hekla eruption in 1104 AD. The site was excavated in the 1930s and a reconstruction called Þjóðveldisbærinn was built nearby, offering visitors a glimpse into medieval Icelandic life. The valley is also home to spectacular waterfalls, including Háifoss (122m, Iceland's third-highest) and the enchanting Gjáin valley with its moss-covered lava formations, streams, ponds, and multiple small waterfalls. The landscape is a mix of lush vegetation, volcanic rock, birch forest, and highland wilderness. The area serves as a gateway to the highlands and offers excellent hiking, photography, and historical exploration.
📖 History
The valley was settled during Iceland's Viking age and contained numerous prosperous farms due to good grazing land. The catastrophic Hekla eruption of 1104 AD buried many farms under volcanic ash, preserving them for future archaeological study. Stöng farm was discovered and excavated in the 1930s, revealing a typical wealthy medieval Icelandic farmstead with a longhouse, hall, and adjoining structures. The site provides invaluable insights into how Icelanders lived during the Commonwealth period.
