Book NowAbout Sun Voyager
Sólfar (Sun Voyager) is one of Iceland's most photographed sculptures, created by artist Jón Gunnar Árnason. Located on the scenic Reykjavík waterfront, this striking stainless steel sculpture resembles a Viking ship but was actually designed to represent a dreamboat and an ode to the sun. The sculpture faces north toward the mountains across Faxaflói Bay, with Mount Esja creating a stunning backdrop. Completed in 1990 to commemorate Reykjavík's 200th anniversary, the artwork has become one of the city's most beloved landmarks. The sculpture's skeletal design and reflective surface change appearance with the light, weather, and seasons, making it a favorite subject for photographers at all times of day. At sunset and during the midnight sun in summer, the sculpture takes on particularly golden hues that beautifully complement its sun-themed symbolism.
