Skriðuklaustur Monastery & Cultural Centre
About Skriðuklaustur Monastery & Cultural Centre
Skriðuklaustur is the site of a 16th-century Augustinian monastery on the shores of Lagarfljót lake, excavated in recent decades to reveal the remains of Iceland's largest pre-Reformation monastic complex. The modern cultural centre built on the site includes a restaurant, a Gunnar Gunnarsson literary museum (the famous Icelandic-Danish author lived here), and an exhibition on the archaeology and history of the monastery.
