About Skógafoss Base Viewpoint
Skógafoss is located on Route 1 in the village of Skógar. The waterfall is one of Iceland's largest, 25 metres wide and 60 metres tall. There are two viewing options: 1. Base viewpoint: Walk right up to the falls (prepare to get wet from spray) 2. Upper viewpoint: Climb 527 steps to a platform above the falls The site has parking, restrooms, a café, and the Skógar Museum nearby.
📖 Story
Legend says a Viking settler, Þrasi Þórólfsson, hid a treasure chest behind Skógafoss. The first person to find it grabbed the ring on the chest, but it broke off and the treasure vanished. The ring was later used to make a church door handle in Skógar.
