About

The Icelandic Punk Museum is located in Reykjavík's Grandi harbor district, housed in a former underground public toilet that was closed in 2012 and repurposed as a museum in 2016. The museum documents Iceland's punk rock scene from the late 1970s through the 1990s, a period when punk had disproportionate cultural influence in Iceland. Key bands covered include: - Þeyr, KUKL, Tappi Tíkarrass (Björk's early band) - Sykurmolarnir, Fræbbblarnir, Ego - International connections to UK and US punk Exhibits include: - Original instruments used by Icelandic punk bands - Concert posters and flyers - Clothing and band memorabilia - Photographs and documentary footage - Audio listening stations - Graffiti and protest art The museum hosts occasional live punk concerts in its tiny 12-person capacity space, maintaining the DIY spirit of the original scene. The bathroom stall architecture is preserved as part of the aesthetic. Entry is free (donations welcome). Visitors can try on punk clothing, play instruments, and interact with exhibits. The space is small — visits take 20–30 minutes. The museum is run by punk scene veterans and maintains an anti-commercial, grassroots ethos.

📖 Story

Iceland's punk scene exploded in the 1980s — DIY bands recording in basements, anarchist politics, and furious energy in a country of 200,000 people. The museum preserves this era in the most punk location possible: a renovated underground public toilet. Glass cases show guitars, drum kits, leather jackets and flyers. Walls display posters and graffiti. The 12-person capacity room occasionally hosts live punk gigs — just as cramped and sweaty as the original scene. It's gloriously, authentically punk.
