Öxará is a location that appears in **Hrafnkels saga Freysgoða, Ljósvetninga saga, Njáls saga**, one of the Íslendingasögur — the Sagas of Icelanders. These remarkable medieval texts were written in Iceland during the 13th and 14th centuries, preserving oral histories and stories from the Viking Age settlement of Iceland (9th–11th centuries). The sagas describe real people, places, and events, making locations like Öxará living connections to Iceland's deep past. Many of these saga sites can still be visited today, standing as silent witnesses to the dramatic events recorded in the ancient texts. From the saga: "Hrafnkels saga Freysgoða (9) Þeir ganga út og ofan að Öxará fyrir neðan brúna.Ljósvetninga saga (16) Vil eg það nú reyna hvort þetta er sannmæli eða eigi því að eg vil skora á þig til hólmgöngu að þú komir á þriggja nátta fresti í hólm þann er liggur hér í Öxará er menn hafa áður vanir verið á hólm að ganga og berjumst þar tveir svo sem forn lög liggja til.Njáls saga (24) Gunnar mælti: „Þeir séu heyrandi vottar er hjá eru að eg skora þér Hrútur til hólmgöngu og skalt þú berjast við mig í dag í hólmi þeim er hér er í Öxará.“ (138) Síðan fóru þeir í braut og vestur yfir Öxará og svo til Hlaðbúðar. (145) Sneru þeir ofan fyrir austan Öxará. (145) Nú brestur flótti í liði Flosa og flýja þeir allir vestur um Öxará en þeir Ásgrímur og Gissur hvíti gengu eftir og allur herinn."
