About Nauthúsagil Canyon

Nauthúsagil is located near the southern entrance to Þórsmörk valley, accessible from Route F249. The hike into the canyon is about 1 km and takes 30–45 minutes. You'll need to wade through a shallow stream to enter the canyon. Waterproof boots are recommended. Inside, the canyon is narrow and dramatic, with vertical mossy walls and a waterfall at the end. The hike is moderate but adventurous. It's best visited in summer when water levels are lower.

📖 Story

Nauthúsagil means 'bull shed ravine' in Icelandic — farmers once used the canyon to shelter livestock. Today it's a popular hiking destination where you can walk between narrow canyon walls covered in thick green moss, ending at a beautiful waterfall.
