Story & Folklore

Mjóifjörður — 'narrow fjord' — is one of the most remote fjords in East Iceland's intricate coastline. A single-track gravel road winds along one side of the fjord and dead-ends at the small community of Seyðisfjarðarbyggð. The fjord is exceptionally narrow and deep, with steep walls rising directly from the water on both sides. A geothermal hot pot sits at the Heydalur farm at the fjord's end. In summer, the wildflower meadows on the fjord floor and the silence — broken only by the river and seabirds — give Mjóifjörður a quality of remoteness that even the Eastfjords rarely match.
