📖 Story
Krafla erupted 29 times between 1975-1984 in a series called the Krafla Fires. Lava fountains shot hundreds of metres high. Fresh lava fields covered the landscape — still black and steaming today. Víti crater ('Hell') formed in an eruption and filled with turquoise geothermal water. You can walk to the crater rim and see the aqua lake below. Nearby: Leirhnjúkur geothermal area with steaming vents and colorful mud. Krafla Power Station converts the volcano's heat to electricity. It's an active, dramatic volcanic landscape.
