About

Keldur is a historic turf farmstead located near Hvolsvöllur in South Iceland, believed to have been continuously inhabited since the 12th century or earlier. It is one of Iceland's best-preserved examples of traditional turf architecture and one of the few remaining farmsteads mentioned in the Icelandic Sagas. The farm is most famous for appearing in Njál's Saga, where it is described as the home of chieftain Ingjaldur Höskuldsson. One of the most intriguing features is a 20-metre underground passage built as an escape route during the violent feuds of the saga age. This tunnel is still intact and can be explored on guided tours. The turf houses at Keldur date from different periods, with some structures built as recently as the early 20th century, though the layout and construction techniques follow centuries-old methods. The thick turf walls provide natural insulation, keeping interiors warm in winter and cool in summer. Keldur is managed by the National Museum of Iceland and is open to visitors during summer months. Guided tours provide historical context and access to the turf buildings and underground passage.

📖 Story

Keldur appears in Njál's Saga, Iceland's most famous medieval saga. It was home to Ingjaldur Höskuldsson, a chieftain who built a secret underground escape tunnel to flee enemies during Iceland's saga-age feuds. That same tunnel still exists today, over 1000 years later. Walking through the turf houses at Keldur is like stepping straight into the Viking Age — low ceilings, grassy roofs, stone walls, and the earth pressing in from all sides. Few places in Iceland connect you so directly to the lives of saga-age Icelanders.
