📖 Story

Hvítserkur rises 15 metres from the sea like a creature frozen mid-drink. Erosion carved holes through the basalt, creating shapes that suggest an animal — dragon, dinosaur, or elephant depending on the angle. White bird droppings cover parts (hvítserkur means 'white shirt'), and seals often haul out on nearby rocks. Icelandic folklore explains the formation differently: a troll from Strandir tried to destroy a monastery by throwing rocks, but dawn caught him and sunlight turned him to stone.

See Iceland's most iconic sea stack — a 15-meter basalt dragon (or troll) drinking from Húnaflói bay, one of the country's most photographed formations.

💡 Did You Know?

Hvítserkur means 'white shirt' — the rock is colored white by decades of bird droppings, not natural mineral color.
