Story & Folklore

Húsafell is a small resort village in the Borgarfjörður valley, surrounded by some of West Iceland's best natural scenery. Lava fields from the Hallmundarhraun eruption 1,000 years ago stretch in every direction; within them lie Viðgelmir, Iceland's largest accessible lava tube, and the Langjökull glacier is visible to the east. The Húsafell canyon is full of waterfalls, the hot springs at Húsafell are geothermally fed, and the campsite here is one of Iceland's most beautiful. Most famously, the 186-kilogram lifting stone Husafell Stone sits near the local church — a traditional test of strength that has challenged farmers, strongmen and tourists for centuries.
