About

Hofsós swimming pool is a geothermally-heated outdoor pool located in the small village of Hofsós on Skagafjörður's eastern shore in North Iceland. The village has a population of around 150 and is known for its Emigration Museum. The pool was redesigned in 2010 to incorporate an infinity edge that aligns with the ocean horizon. The main pool is 25 metres long and heated to approximately 28–29°C, with two smaller hot tubs at 38–40°C. The pool is perched on a hillside approximately 10 metres above sea level, offering unobstructed views across Skagafjörður and the mountains beyond. The infinity edge design creates a visual effect where the pool water appears to merge with the fjord and sky, particularly striking on clear days. The setting is dramatic in all weather — sunny, stormy, or under the northern lights. Hofsós pool has become one of Iceland's most photographed swimming pools and is frequently featured in travel media as an example of Iceland's unique pool culture. The pool is open year-round and entry is very affordable (typical Icelandic pool pricing). The village of Hofsós also offers the Icelandic Emigration Centre museum, documenting the mass emigration of Icelanders to North America in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

📖 Story

Hofsós pool might be the most beautifully positioned swimming pool in Iceland. Built into a clifftop overlooking Skagafjörður, the infinity edge creates the illusion that the warm water flows directly into the cold Arctic Ocean beyond. On calm days, the pool, fjord and sky merge into shades of blue. On stormy days, waves crash beneath as you float in warm geothermal waters above. It is a stunning example of how Icelanders have perfected the art of combining natural beauty with their beloved swimming culture.
