About
Höfn is located on a peninsula on Iceland's southeast coast, surrounded by sea on three sides and Vatnajökull glacier to the north. Its population is around 2,200, making it the largest town in the region. The town's economy centres on fishing, tourism and services. Höfn is famous across Iceland for its langoustine (Icelandic lobster), which is abundant in the surrounding waters. Many restaurants in town specialise in lobster dishes, and the annual Lobster Festival in June draws visitors from across the country. Höfn serves as the logistical gateway to many of southeast Iceland's most iconic attractions, including Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon (80 km west), Diamond Beach, Vestrahorn mountain, and the vast Vatnajökull National Park. The town has accommodation, fuel, supermarkets, restaurants and tour operators. The harbour area is pleasant for walking, with views across the water to the mountains and glaciers. Just outside town is Ósland Nature Reserve, offering easy hiking trails and birdwatching. The Gamlabúð Visitor Centre downtown provides exhibits on the region's glaciers and wildlife.
📖 Story
Höfn means 'harbour' in Icelandic — and the harbour defines this town. For generations it has been a fishing hub, and today its waters yield some of the finest langoustine (Icelandic lobster) in the world. Every summer the town hosts the Lobster Festival (Humarhátíð), drawing thousands of visitors to feast on fresh seafood. Beyond food, Höfn is the natural base for exploring the glaciers, lagoons and black sand beaches that make southeast Iceland one of the country's most dramatic regions.
