These remarkable medieval texts were written in Iceland during the 13th and 14th centuries, preserving oral histories and stories from the Viking Age settlement of Iceland (9th–11th centuries). The sagas describe real people, places, and events, making locations like Hítará living connections to Iceland's deep past. Many of these saga sites can still be visited today, standing as silent witnesses to the dramatic events recorded in the ancient texts. From the saga: "Ey liggur í Hítará, gagnauðig bæði að selveri og eggveri, og þar voru sláttur í og sæði. (22) Og er Eiríkur varð var við ríður hann upp í Hólm og segir Birni en hann brá við þegar og reið eftir þeim en leið þeirra lá út yfir Hítará. (26) Þórður hafði spurt um för Bjarnar og fer á leið hans með níu menn og situr fyrir honum við Hítará. (27) Hann sté þá á bak Hvítingi um síðir og reið fyrir og fylgdi Þorfinnu og koma að Hítará og var hún upp gengin mjög og urðu þeir votir á ánni. (32) En þeir eiga að fara yfir Hítará, skammt frá því er hún fellur úr vatninu."
