📖 Story

Harpa opened in 2011 as Reykjavík's cultural centerpiece. The building's geometric glass facade was designed by artist Ólafur Elíasson to echo Iceland's basalt column formations. Thousands of glass panels reflect harbor, sky, and city in constantly changing patterns. Inside, LED lights illuminate the glass at night creating kaleidoscope effects visible across the harbor. Harpa hosts Iceland Symphony Orchestra, opera, conferences, and cultural events. Even if you don't attend a performance, walking through the glowing glass interior is an architectural experience.
