Story & Folklore

Hafnir is a small Reykjanes Peninsula village near the international airport that feels entirely separate from the airport sprawl nearby. The village has a historic church and a small harbour. Above Hafnir, the Reykjanes Geopark trail passes through lava fields of varying ages and the Hafnaberg bird cliff — a colonised sea cliff with thousands of seabirds nesting in summer including razorbills, guillemots and kittiwakes. The cliff face drops 25–30 metres to the sea and in the right season the noise of the colony is extraordinary. The hiking trail along the Reykjanes coast from Hafnir to Garðskagi is one of the peninsula's best walks.
