Gullfoss holds a unique place in Iceland's conservation history. In the early 20th century, foreign investors sought to harness the immense power of Gullfoss for hydroelectricity. The farmer who owned the land at the time, Tómas Tómasson, leased the waterfall to investors. However, his daughter, Sigríður Tómasdóttir, fiercely opposed the plans. She famously threatened to throw herself into the waterfall if construction proceeded, walking barefoot over 100 km to Reykjavík multiple times to protest and pursue legal action. Sigríður's unwavering dedication and legal battles, though ultimately unsuccessful in court due to the lease agreement, created significant public awareness and sentiment. Her determination brought the plight of Gullfoss to national attention. Eventually, the lease agreement became invalid due to non-payment of fees, and the Icelandic state acquired the waterfall. Thanks to Sigríður's pioneering environmental activism, Gullfoss was preserved in its natural state for future generations to admire its untamed beauty, making her one of Iceland's first environmental heroes. Her legacy is honored with a memorial plaque near the falls, a testament to her courage and love for this natural wonder.
