About
Grundarfjörður is a fishing town located on the north coast of Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland. The population is approximately 900, making it one of the larger settlements on the peninsula. The town's economy is based primarily on fishing and fish processing, with tourism growing rapidly in recent years. The harbor is active year-round, and the local fish factory processes cod, haddock and other species caught in nearby waters. Grundarfjörður's most famous landmark is Kirkjufell mountain, which rises 463 metres just outside town and has become one of Iceland's most photographed mountains. The mountain appeared in the HBO series Game of Thrones and is particularly popular for northern lights photography. The town offers accommodation, restaurants, supermarkets, fuel and tour operators. Whale watching tours operate from the harbor, with orcas and other species frequently spotted in Breiðafjörður bay. The area is also excellent for birdwatching and fishing. Grundarfjörður has a long history dating back to the 16th century and has been an important trading post and fishing station throughout Icelandic history.
📖 Story
Grundarfjörður sits in one of Iceland's most photogenic locations — a small harbor town cradled between mountains and sea, with the perfect pyramid of Kirkjufell rising just beyond. The town has been a fishing hub for over a century, and fishing remains central to its economy and culture. In winter, the town becomes a prime northern lights viewing spot, with Kirkjufell providing the perfect foreground for aurora photography. Grundarfjörður played a starring role in Game of Thrones (as 'arrowhead mountain'), bringing international attention to this quiet corner of Iceland.
