📖 Story

Grafarkirkja is Iceland's smallest and one of last turf churches. Built using layered sod and stone (traditional Icelandic technique for insulation), the church seats ~20 people. The grass roof requires replanting every few years. Inside: simple wooden pews, altar, and pulpit — austere Lutheran beauty. Turf churches were common until 1900s when timber and concrete replaced sod. Grafarkirkja was reconstructed in 1890s and preserved as cultural heritage. It's in the scenic Skagafjörður valley surrounded by farms.
