At Þingvellir's Alþingi (Iceland's parliament, 930-1262), the Law Speaker (Lögsögumaður) stood on Goðasteinn rock platform to recite all of Iceland's laws from memory. Every free man in Iceland gathered to hear laws announced and disputes settled. The Law Speaker had to memorize the entire legal code — reciting one-third each year over three years. Goðasteinn was the symbolic and literal center of Icelandic democracy, one of the world's oldest parliaments. Today you can stand where Law Speakers stood 1,000 years ago, though the stone platform has eroded.
