Geysir Hot Spring Area

About Geysir Hot Spring Area

The Geysir geothermal area in Haukadalur valley contains the original Geysir — the geyser that gave all geysers their name — along with dozens of bubbling hot springs and fumaroles. Geysir itself rarely erupts today, but its neighbour Strokkur erupts reliably every 5–10 minutes, shooting boiling water 15–40 metres into the air. The area has a visitor centre, restaurant and hotel. The word 'geyser' derives from the Old Norse 'geysa' meaning 'to gush'.
