Friðheimar is located in Reykholt, just off the Golden Circle route, about 30 minutes from Reykjavík. The greenhouse covers thousands of square metres and produces tonnes of tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers each year using sustainable geothermal heating. The restaurant is located inside the greenhouse itself. Diners sit at tables surrounded by towering tomato plants, with bees buzzing overhead pollinating the crops. The menu centres on tomatoes: fresh tomato soup served with warm homemade bread, tomato-based pasta, Bloody Marys made with greenhouse-grown tomatoes, and seasonal specials. Visitors can also take guided tours of the greenhouse to learn about geothermal agriculture and Iceland's efforts to grow fresh produce year-round. Friðheimar also keeps horses and offers horse shows in the summer months. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially during summer. The restaurant is family-friendly and wheelchair accessible.

📖 Story

Friðheimar began as a family-run tomato farm using geothermal energy to grow produce year-round in Iceland's harsh climate. In the early 2000s, the family opened a small restaurant inside the greenhouse, serving simple tomato soup and bread to visitors curious about Icelandic agriculture. Word spread quickly, and today Friðheimar is a must-visit stop on the Golden Circle. The experience — eating fresh, warm food surrounded by the hum of bees, the scent of tomato vines, and the glow of natural light through glass — is unforgettable.
