About

Faxi (Vatnsleysufoss) is a waterfall on the Tungufljót river in South Iceland, located along the Golden Circle route between Skálholt and Geysir. The falls measure approximately 7 metres in height and 80 metres in width, creating a broad, even cascade. The rock formation at Faxi is basalt, and the river flows over a natural ledge before dropping into a wide, shallow pool. The flow is steady year-round, fed by glacial and groundwater sources. In summer the surrounding area is green with grass and wildflowers, while in winter the falls can partially freeze, creating beautiful ice formations. One of Faxi's unique features is the salmon ladder — a stepped channel built alongside the falls to allow Atlantic salmon to migrate upstream to their spawning grounds. During the summer migration season (July–September), visitors can often see salmon jumping through the ladder. Faxi is easily accessible from Route 1 via a short gravel road. There is a parking area, picnic tables, walking paths and viewing platforms. A small hydroelectric power station operates nearby, one of Iceland's earliest (built 1907). The site is peaceful and far less crowded than other Golden Circle stops.

📖 Story

Faxi is often overlooked in the rush to reach Gullfoss and Geysir, yet it has a charm all its own. Unlike the thundering power of Gullfoss, Faxi is gentle and approachable — a wide curtain of water spilling over a basalt ledge into a calm pool below. A salmon ladder built into the falls allows fish to migrate upstream, and on summer days you can watch salmon leaping through the rushing water. It is a peaceful, family-friendly stop that offers a quieter side of Iceland's waterfall wonders.
