📖 Story

Dimmuborgir translates to 'Dark Castles' — an accurate description of the eerie lava towers, caves and formations that rise from flat ground like ruins of some troll city. The area formed 2,300 years ago when lava flowed over wetlands. Steam explosions blew holes through the crust, creating the pillars and arches. In Icelandic folklore, Dimmuborgir is where Satan landed after being cast from heaven, and where the 13 Yule Lads (mischievous Christmas trolls) live with their mother, the child-eating ogress Grýla.
