📖 Story

Búðakirkja is Iceland's most photographed church after Hallgrímskirkja. The tiny black wooden church stands completely alone in a moss-covered lava field on Snæfellsnes's southern coast. No village, no houses — just the church, ocean, mountains, and sky. The original church was built in 1848; after decades of abandonment, it was rebuilt in 1987. The setting is hauntingly beautiful: black church against green moss, blue ocean, and snow-capped Snæfellsjökull. At sunset, the light is magical. The nearby hotel (Hotel Búðir) is one of Iceland's most romantic. The isolation creates powerful atmosphere.
