About
Brúarhlöð is a river canyon located on the Hvítá river in South Iceland, upstream from Gullfoss waterfall. The canyon is carved through ancient basalt lava flows, revealing striking columnar jointing and layered rock formations. The Hvítá river here is fed by Langjökull glacier and carries massive volumes of glacial meltwater. The water appears bright turquoise due to glacial sediment (rock flour) suspended in the flow. The river narrows dramatically at Brúarhlöð, forcing the water through tight channels that create powerful rapids and deep pools. A footbridge spans the canyon, providing spectacular views down into the churning water and across to the basalt cliffs on either side. The bridge is sturdy but narrow, and the roar of the river below adds to the dramatic experience. Brúarhlöð is accessed via Route 37 and a short gravel road. A small parking area and walking trail lead to the bridge. The site is far less visited than nearby Golden Circle attractions, making it a peaceful and rewarding stop. The area is also popular with kayakers and rafting groups navigating the Hvítá river.
📖 Story
Brúarhlöð means 'Bridge Canyon' in Icelandic, named after the footbridge that spans the churning Hvítá river. The canyon is part of the same river system that feeds Gullfoss waterfall downstream. Here, the glacial water has carved deep channels through layered basalt, creating narrow gorges and swirling rapids of stunning turquoise blue. The footbridge offers a thrilling vantage point — standing directly above the roaring river as it crashes through the rocks below. Few Golden Circle visitors know this spot exists, yet it rivals the main attractions in sheer dramatic beauty.
