About
Brennisteinsalda is a 855-metre-high rhyolite mountain located in the Landmannalaugar geothermal area in Iceland's southern Highlands. The mountain is one of the main attractions in Landmannalaugar and serves as the dramatic backdrop to the campsite and hot springs. The mountain's name means 'Sulfur Wave,' reflecting the vivid yellow sulfur deposits that cover much of its surface. The slopes are multicolored due to volcanic minerals: - **Yellow**: Sulfur deposits - **Red/Orange**: Oxidized iron - **Green**: Moss and algae - **Blue/Grey**: Rhyolite rock - **Black**: Obsidian and basalt Geothermal activity is visible across the mountain — steam vents, fumaroles, and warm ground create a constantly shifting landscape of mist and color. The area is geothermally active, with temperatures just below the surface reaching 100°C or more. A marked hiking trail leads from Landmannalaugar campsite to the summit of Brennisteinsalda. The hike is approximately 4 km round trip and takes 2–3 hours. The terrain is steep and loose in places, requiring good footwear. From the summit, panoramic views extend across Landmannalaugar, Laugahraun lava field, and surrounding peaks. Brennist einsalda is part of the Fjallabak Nature Reserve and is accessible only in summer (typically July–September) when highland roads are open.
📖 Story
Brennisteinsalda is the mountain that defines Landmannalaugar. Its slopes are a riot of color — red oxidized iron, yellow sulfur deposits, green moss on cooler rocks, blue-grey rhyolite stone — all layered and striped like a painting. Steam vents hiss and bubble on the mountainside, proof that Iceland's volcanic forces are very much alive beneath. The air smells faintly of sulfur. A hiking trail climbs to the summit, where the views extend across the otherworldly Landmannalaugar highlands — lava fields, rainbow mountains and obsidian peaks stretching to the horizon. It is one of Iceland's most surreal landscapes.
