These remarkable medieval texts were written in Iceland during the 13th and 14th centuries, preserving oral histories and stories from the Viking Age settlement of Iceland (9th–11th centuries). The sagas describe real people, places, and events, making locations like Brautarholt living connections to Iceland's deep past. Many of these saga sites can still be visited today, standing as silent witnesses to the dramatic events recorded in the ancient texts. From the saga: "Eftir það reisti Andríður bæ í brautinni og kallaði Brautarholt því að skógurinn var svo þykkur að honum þótti allt annað starfameira. (2) Eftir boðið fór Þuríður í Brautarholt og tók við búi fyrir innan stokk. (2) Þessi kvíga fannst þrem vetrum síðar á nesi því er liggur til vesturs undan Brautarholti og hafði hún þá með sér tvo dilka, annan veturgamlan en annan sumargamlan. (2) Þann vetur er Andríður bjó fyrstan í Brautarholti andaðist Helgi bjóla. (3) Þá er þau Andríður höfðu búið nokkura vetur í Brautarholti gátu þau son saman. (3) Hann fór jafnan í Brautarholt að finna föður sinn og móður og svo gerði hann enn. (3) Um vorið er á leið er þess getið að Búi fór til Brautarholts. (3) Búi dvaldist nokkurar nætur í Brautarholti og er hann bjóst heim kom Þuríður móðir hans að honum og mælti: „Það vildi eg son minn að þú færir eigi svo óvarlega.“ (4) Þá fer Búi einn aftan seint út í Brautarholt og var þar um nóttina. (5) Skal fara í Brautarholt að drepa Andríð. (5) Ríða þeir þá í Brautarholt. (17) Búi fór brátt í Brautarholt að finna móður sína."
