About

Bláhnjúkur is a 940-metre-high volcanic peak located in the Landmannalaugar geothermal area in Iceland's southern Highlands. The mountain is composed primarily of dark volcanic rock, particularly obsidian and basaltic scoria, giving it a distinctive black appearance. The name 'Bláhnjúkur' means 'Blue Peak,' likely referring to the blue-grey hue the mountain takes on under certain lighting conditions, though its slopes are predominantly black. Bláhnjúkur is a popular summit hike from Landmannalaugar campsite. The trail ascends approximately 2.5 km with 300 metres of elevation gain. The hike takes 2–3 hours round trip and is moderately strenuous. The lower slopes pass through fields of obsidian (volcanic glass), while the upper slopes are loose scoria requiring careful footing. From the summit, 360-degree views extend across the Landmannalaugar highlands: - Brennisteinsalda's colorful slopes to the southeast - Laugahraun lava field stretching north - Torfajökull glacier and volcanic system - The start of the Laugavegur trail heading toward Þórsmörk Bláhnjúkur is the first major ascent on the Laugavegur long-distance hiking trail, which crosses the Highlands from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk. The mountain is accessible only in summer when Highland F-roads are open (typically early July to mid-September).

📖 Story

Despite its name ('Blue Peak'), Bláhnjúkur's slopes are jet black — covered in volcanic obsidian and scoria from ancient eruptions. The peak rises steeply from the Landmannalaugar valley, and the climb to the summit is one of the classic hikes in the area. The trail ascends through fields of glassy black obsidian that crunch underfoot, then up scoria slopes to the summit ridge. From the top, the view is overwhelming: rainbow mountains, steaming valleys, black lava fields and glaciers stretching across one of Iceland's most alien landscapes. Bláhnjúkur is the first major peak along the famous Laugavegur hiking trail.
