About Austurvöllur Square
Austurvöllur is the heart of central Reykjavík — a small grassy square flanked by the Parliament House (Alþingi) and Dómkirkjan cathedral. It's where Icelanders gather for celebrations, protests and summer picnics. The square is named after the eastern fields of the original Viking settlement and has been the political and social centre of the city since the 19th century. The statue of independence hero Jón Sigurðsson watches over it.
