Arnarfjörður is the largest and longest fjord in the Westfjords region of Iceland, stretching approximately 30 kilometres inland from the open sea. It is oriented northwest to southeast and branches into two main bays — Borgarfjörður to the east and Suðurfirðir to the south. The drive along the fjord's shores is one of the most rewarding scenic routes in the Westfjords. Mountains rise steeply from the water on both sides, with virtually no lowland strips — in most places the slopes fall almost directly into the sea. The visual effect is dramatic and raw, particularly in the slanting light of early morning or evening. The village of Bíldudalur sits at the western shore, known as the 'good weather capital' of the Westfjords due to its sheltered position. At the inner end of the fjord, one of the roads climbs toward Dynjandi, the iconic multi-tiered waterfall that cascades 100 metres down to the fjord below. Arnarfjörður is also known for the highest mountain in the Westfjords, Kaldbakur (998 m), which rises between this fjord and the neighbouring Dýrafjörður. In folklore, Arnarfjörður is said to house more sea monsters than any other Icelandic fjord — a fact celebrated by the Sea Monster Museum in Bíldudalur. The route is driveable year-round in good conditions, though mountain roads around the area can be challenging in winter. Allow a full day to explore the fjord properly in combination with Dynjandi and Bíldudalur.

Arnarfjörður takes its name from Örn ('Eagle'), the first settler of this fjord according to the Sagas. But it is perhaps better known for something altogether more mysterious. More sea monster sightings have been reported from these waters than any other fjord in Iceland — over 200 accounts spanning centuries, ranging from serpentine creatures to massive beasts with glowing eyes. The fjord's deep, dark waters and dramatic mountain walls create an atmosphere that makes the stories feel entirely believable. Drive its shores slowly and watch the water.
