The construction of St. Stephen's Basilica began in 1851, a monumental undertaking that spanned over five decades. Designed by József Hild, it was later continued by Miklós Ybl after Hild's death, and finally completed by József Kauser. The basilica faced several challenges during its construction, including the collapse of the dome in 1868, which necessitated a complete redesign. Despite these setbacks, the builders persevered, completing the basilica in 1905, a testament to Hungarian resilience and architectural ambition. Dedicated to St. Stephen I, the first King of Hungary (c. 975–1038), the basilica holds immense religious and national significance. St. Stephen is revered for establishing Christianity in Hungary, and his mummified right hand, known as the Holy Right, is enshrined within the basilica, making it a significant pilgrimage site.
