Its formation is tied to the volcanic activity that shaped much of Iceland over millions of years. The Stokksnes peninsula, where Vestrahorn is located, has a rich history. It was one of the first places in Iceland to be settled by Vikings, and remnants of their presence can still be found. More recently, during World War II and the Cold War, the peninsula became strategically important, leading to the establishment of a NATO radar station, which remains operational today. A fascinating replica of a Viking village has also been constructed nearby, offering a glimpse into early Icelandic life.
