The idea of constructing a new church in Þórshöfn was first documented in 1945 within the minutes of the Sauðanes parish, highlighting a long-standing aspiration within the community. For nearly five decades, the vision remained, discussed and nurtured by generations of local residents and parish leaders who recognized the profound necessity for a dedicated spiritual edifice. It wasn't until 1993 that the foundational work for Þórshafnarkirkja finally began, marking a significant milestone in the community's persistent efforts. Six years of dedicated construction followed, culminating in its official consecration by the Bishop of Iceland on August 22, 1999. The completion of the church's exterior, a task meticulously handled by master mason Eiður Árnason, was finalized in the summer of 2002. Since its completion, Þórshafnarkirkja has not only served as a place of worship but also as a vibrant cultural hub.
