Strokkur holds a significant place in Iceland's natural history, with its activity documented as far back as 1789. It was during this year that a powerful earthquake naturally reopened its vent, initiating a period of consistent eruptions that captivated early visitors and locals alike in the Haukadalur geothermal area. Over the centuries, Strokkur has demonstrated the dynamic and unpredictable nature of geothermal forces. While the nearby Great Geysir, which gave its name to all geysers worldwide, has become largely dormant, Strokkur's reliability has grown. Its consistent eruptions were further secured in 1963 when human intervention, specifically drilling, successfully unclogged its vent, reactivating it and ensuring its spectacular displays continue to this day for countless tourists, making it a cornerstone of Icelandic tourism.
Strokkur is a fountain-type geyser beside Great Geysir in Haukadalur. Before many eruptions, the water surface rises into a blue dome and then breaks into a column of water and steam. Eruptions commonly occur several minutes apart, but there is no fixed timetable and height varies. Visitors should remain behind barriers and on marked paths because the surrounding water and ground can be dangerously hot.
