Folklore
Story & Folklore
Strokkur is the reliable geyser every visitor to the Golden Circle comes to see. Every 6–10 minutes, a bulge of water the size of a bathtub rises in the vent, expands into a beautiful blue dome, and then explodes upward in a column of steam and water 15–25 metres high. The sequence — dome forming, explosion, steam plume — happens in under two seconds. The classic photograph involves framing the blue dome just before it explodes; capturing this requires fast reflexes and a willingness to wait through several eruptions for perfect light. The name means 'The Churn'. Strokkur has been erupting consistently since 1789, when an earthquake reopened its vent. The great Geysir is dormant right beside it, a reminder of nature's unpredictability.
