Stórihver is an integral part of the Torfajökull geothermal area, one of Iceland's most active and extensive geothermal regions. Its existence is a direct consequence of Iceland's unique geological position atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where tectonic plates diverge, fueling intense volcanic and geothermal activity. While specific historical accounts from ancient texts like the *Landnámabók* or the *Íslendingasögur* are not associated directly with Stórihver, its natural formation predates human settlement, continuously shaping the landscape for millennia. In more recent history, Stórihver has gained prominence as a significant landmark along the Laugavegur hiking trail, one of Iceland's most celebrated multi-day treks. This trail, which connects Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk, guides adventurers through some of the country's most spectacular and varied landscapes, with Stórihver offering a powerful demonstration of geothermal forces. Its role as a 'beautiful green oasis' (gróðurvin) along the challenging Landmannalaugar-Hrafntinnusker leg of the trail underscores its importance as a natural beacon and a testament to the enduring power of the Icelandic earth.

Stórihver lies in the geothermal landscape of the Torfajökull area.
