Sólheimasandur itself is a vast glacial outwash plain, or jökulsandur, a significant geological feature formed by glacial meltwaters depositing sediment over millennia. It stretches across the South Coast of Iceland, lying between the dramatic inland cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean. This expansive, featureless black sand landscape is a testament to the powerful forces of Iceland's volcanic and glacial activity, shaping a unique environment that has existed for centuries. The human history of Sólheimasandur took a dramatic turn on November 24, 1973, when a US Navy Douglas DC-3 aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing on its desolate black sands. The plane, reportedly running low on fuel and encountering severe weather, managed a controlled landing, and all seven crew members on board survived the incident. The US Navy subsequently stripped the plane of anything valuable, leaving the fuselage behind. For many years, the plane wreck remained a relatively obscure local curiosity, known mostly to hikers and a few adventurous photographers. However, around 2013, images of the stark silver plane against the black sand and sky began to circulate widely online, transforming Sólheimasandur into one of Iceland's most iconic and sought-after photographic destinations. Today, it stands as a poignant symbol of human endeavor, resilience, and the relentless embrace of nature.

Sólheimasandur is a stark coastal plain shaped by glacial rivers, volcanic sediment and wind. The well-known DC-3 wreck lies on the plain but is mapped separately as its own attraction. Visitors crossing exposed parts of Sólheimasandur should prepare for rapidly changing weather and strong wind.
