The history of Skarðskirkja á Landi is a compelling narrative of perseverance against nature's challenges. The original Skarð farm was a prominent estate, but around the turn of the 19th century, severe sand erosion, known as 'sandfok,' began to render the area uninhabitable. This environmental upheaval forced the local farmer, Jón, to relocate the entire settlement and its church to a safer location near a hill called Arnarbæli. The current church is not the first on this site. A new church was built by the parishioners in 1879, replacing an earlier structure. As the community grew, the churchyard became too small, leading to its expansion with a larger stone wall in 1923. However, this 1879 church was eventually deemed in need of replacement, and the present Skarðskirkja á Landi was constructed in 1931, a testament to the community's ongoing dedication to their place of worship. Over the decades, the church and its grounds have seen continuous care. The churchyard was further improved in 1962, and in 2001, the access to the church was upgraded, alongside interior renovations. These efforts highlight Skarðskirkja á Landi's significance not just as a religious site, but as a cherished historical landmark reflecting the enduring spirit and cultural heritage of South Iceland.
