About
About Silfra
Silfra is a fissure in Þingvellir National Park where you can snorkel or dive in the crystal-clear water between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates — one of the only places on Earth where this is possible.
Background
History & Background
The fissure was created by the separation of the two tectonic plates, which drift apart by approximately 2 cm per year. The water in Silfra is glacial meltwater from Langjökull glacier that has been filtered through underground lava rock for 30–100 years, giving it extraordinary clarity with visibility up to 100 meters. Water temperature stays around 2°C year-round.
