Reyðarfjörður is a deep, sheltered East Iceland fjord that made history when the largest industrial project in Iceland's history arrived: the ISAL aluminium smelter and associated hydroelectric infrastructure. The town of Reyðarfjörður grew around the smelter and associated services. The fjord also served as an important Allied naval base during World War II — a museum in town tells this story through personal photographs and artefacts donated by local families.
