The 1362 eruption was exceptionally powerful and devastated the settled district around the volcano, while the 1727 eruption again produced destructive glacial floods. Today Öræfajökull dominates the skyline above the Skaftafell and Öræfi area and remains one of Iceland's most imposing volcanic systems.
